souvenir flow
whenever i go on vacation i like to make art. a couple of weeks ago, i was blessed to visit a couple of cities, starting with paris. on my initial flight, i started thinking about which tool i would use on this trip — i settled on cinema4d. it’s a tool i always wanted to learn and materiality fascinates me (i got started in design by way of streetwear and what drove me there was the range of fabrics, i got into design in order to build out the lookbooks, website, etc. for the streetwear hustle).
anywho — after settling on c4d, i started sketching what the concept could be (shoutout to muse, my fav ipad app, ideation extender). the concept would serve as the constraints to the output as well as the binder across the multiple pieces i was aiming to make. i kept coming back to the idea of memory and how we physically store it — floppy disks, sd cards, hard drives. what if i used the form of something like an sd card and was literal on one side like scribbling “memories of paris” but on the other side, it would be more of a surreal scene of key moments of my time in that place — as if the sd card was unlocked and the contents surrounded the physical piece? i stopped there because my motivation was high and i wanted to seize it, it was now a matter if i could execute the concept with my limited skills with the tool.

my paris memory card —
ingredients
35 msu - 35 years (my age at the time)
art frame - musée d'orsay left a mark on me, teared up in front of a painting for the first time in my life (camille monet on her deathbed)
le servan - one of my fav restaurants
wine & coffee bars - drank a lot of em
windy curtains - the presence of windows and balconies and the breeze combo kept me light and bright
grass patch - the parks and rest spots sprinkled throughout the city were recharging
my london memory card —
ingredients
wood sculpture - susumu koshimizu’s work at the tate lit a fire. same raw material, range of cuts: https://www.tate.org.uk/art/artists/susumu-koshimizu-11583
bms - an inspiring business, part retail, part restaurant, part gallery, and the functions continue: http://www.6a.co.uk/projects/more/blue-mountain-school
willow street - site of a wonderful lil conversation
ikoyi - one of the best meals i’ve had in my time
glass pane - the architecture of the city was very forward and the wide use of glass was a wonderful motif throughout
geo rug - there was this warmth from londoners upon arrival that was unexpected and very welcomed when my expectation was a bit more rigid
i finished a memory card for copenhagen and started one for milan. overall the exercises were super-satisfying™. from an activity perspective, i haven’t felt this fascinated about a new tool (c4d) but more generally, space (3d design) since i was introduced to xcode and ios development. from a vacation perspective, i found myself really refining and pursuing the things that brought me joy while abroad — it’s definitely not a stacked itinerary but a loose pursuit of art, walks, cafes, eats, and conversations. my next trip is prob going to be a multi-day biking trip somewhere, curious if this same souvenir creation flow will feel right then.
moved
i recently discovered madison’s work and find her way of sharing the ineffable through movement — classic magic. watch the video, with audio, until the glass breaks, it’s okay:
i’d love to hear about how you’re going to move in 2022. with grace even if it’s windy right right? that’s how you’ll catch me 🩰
